03 Alero Shifts Hard and Won't Idle
My wife said it's been happening for a few weeks but I just experienced it.
When accelerating from a stop the trans shifts hard and seems to be missing power at times. Decided to change the trans filter, has 80K and was a little low on fluid. Fluid was brown as to be expected and the magnet on the pan was covered (1/8 inch) in crap. When I started it back up to check the fluid it didn't want to run at all and won't stay idling long enough to get under it and check the fluid. The service engine light is on, but I don't have a analyzer, (can you just check the codes with a paper clip?) To me it's almost as there is a vac leak causing the problems but the trans also makes a grinding sound while in park like the torque converter is wiped out. I'm not big on overpriced service centers (sorry if I offended) and really want that to be my last resort. Anybody have any ideas? |

MAF sensor cleaner, is that the same as carb cleaner. If not where might I get that?

Ok I think your just talking about some sort of contact or electronics cleaner. We've got tones of that around the shop. I'll give it a try.

PhishPan, you can't just use any cleaner and it is a sensitive component so using any cleaner may actually cause permanent damage. MAP sensor cleaner which you can buy from any parts store is very light and quickly dries and do not leave any residue.

Codes cannot be checked with a paper clip. However, many auto parts stores will scan for free. Buy the MAF cleaner at the same time. What engine do you have?
