rubbing sound

I have finally resurrected the 94 Geo, a few kinks but otherwise painless to get her ready for the road.

However, after an oil change, a coolant flush, new timing belt, and new alternator belt, there is now a rubbing sound I think coming from something rubbing on the timing cover.

It happens most apparently when the engine is revved, then is allowed to decelerate back to idle. After a couple of seconds the noise goes away.

Any ideas on this? The timing cover is cracked, and missing one mounting tab, but I cannot see anything rubbing. The water pump pulley is damn close, and the crank pulley is about the same. Maybe, 1/32" clearance max.

Im fixing this car for my daughters fiance so they can have a good cheap car to drive.
The rubbing noise is audible as the car drives by.Nothing extreme, but you can hear somethings not right.

Was the timing belt tensioner changed with the timing belt?

could be the tensioner on it's way out. The tensioner can make a rubbing sound, but when they start to get really bad they tend squell.

Have someone rev the engine and you try to narow down where the noise is
coming from.

Do you have a stethiscope?

You might have to take the timing cover off and check the timing belt and tensioner to make sure that nothing is rubbing

A bit of unsolicited advice:

I applaud you for wanting to help your family with economical transportation but would caution you about doing all the work yourself as the car will likely soon be back on your doorstep for more work unless you enlist the owners in its care and feeding....

If you haven't already done so get either your daughter, the fiance or better yer both involved in the fix. This will give them ownership in the mechanical health of the Metro as well as empowering them for the future. I have noticed that the less a person knows about a vehicle the worse they seem to treat it and then wonder why it falls apart.

oh, yes, thank you ,.... it part of my agreement to help fix it,.... he was right there helping at every point. LOL My time isnt free, it comes at least at the cost of learning.
