Re: check engine light

I was always told to disconnect the batter for 15 to 20 seconds then reconnect the battery and any codes in the computer would reset

Go to O'Reilly's and have them clear it with the scanner. If the light comes back on you can then get the new codes.

Re: check engine light

Just because u changed the head gasket doesn't give u the decision to reset that check light. The process of removing the battery is okay but ask yourself what happens if it comes on again. I did this with my malibu 98. When it comes time for emissions it won't pass. Simply get the code first, then determine that you've handled/solved the code issue and then reset it.

take out the oil rings and punch out the cats and fool the down stream O2s with a 1 M ohm resistor and a I uf cap… Nock yourself out
If you had a bad head gasket you probebly had more fault codes than you can shake a stick at. You had misfires, slow hego response do to the water cooling, bad nock, and many more caused by a computer that is an aid, not car doctor.

Heck it may even reset itself after 50 to 150 key starts.

Granted some cars may take 150 miles to complete all the on board tests before it will pass a smog test. Generally speaking it must have no more than two problems.
1 untested diagnostic test (or 2) and or not more than one or two faults that do not light the check engine light. No more than two problems and no MIL.

I bet a dime to a dollar that the last post was a person that had no clue why the check engine light was on, but noticed that it took several starts and miles to turn on the MIL. In some sort of desperation he cleared the codes and drove the car two blocks to the inspection station..... Then failed. The extra charge for the next inspection was just for being stupid.

After all I never heard of Cheerios being “ba-rain” food!
