6.2 n/a and 6.5 td advantages

i was wondering what the 6.2 and the 6.5 td advantages are. i got a 93 gmc k1500 with a 350 and a 5 speed with overdrive. 3.73 gears. i want a good driver respectable pulling power, and to blow a little(or a lota) back smoke once and a while. plus i need dual stacks. a guy i know says i should do a 6.2 with a turbo kit. but im not sure.
thanks guys!

Re: 6.2 n/a and 6.5 td advantages

The earlier 6.2 with mechanical pumps were more reliable, however anything built prior to 2005 were not set up with nitrile seals. The new Ultra low sulfer fuel will eventually kill theses pumps.
The newer 6.5 has a electronic pump which relies on a PMD module that is suppose to be cooled by the fuel on the injection pump. These fail without warning. The best way to resolve this issue is to get an external cooler. generally after you kill the first module, it is best to go external cool and the whole deal will run you about $300. The new 6.5 relies on a electronic transfer pump which fail as well.
The old 6.2 used a mechanical pump.

how different is it to rebuild a 6.5 than my old k motor 350. i thought i would buy a truck with the 6.5 in it and switch everything over. buy before i do that i thought i would rebuild the motor.

Re: 6.2 n/a and 6.5 td advantages

I guess that it all depends on what needs to be rebuilt. What is wrong with the current engine 5.7? What kind of oil pressure do you have? How's the compression? Does it run but weak? Perhaps there is something simple that could be done to revive the current engine.
Rebuilding a 6.5 could get quite costly. Installing either the 6.2 or the 6.5 into a vehicle originally equiped with a gas engine will require some elevated skills. It's not just a bolt up situation. Electrical harnesses and computers will be different not to mention fuel system variations, mounts, brackets, radiator, and a host of little things that will eat your wallet up.
My advice would be to rebuild the gas engine or throw a crate engine in there. If your itentions are set on a diesel, then sell what you have and purchase a diesel truck.

Re: 6.2 n/a and 6.5 td advantages

i want to have a diesel in it. i have time and nothing to pay for i just want to make this truck last alot longer. i want to drive it 2 to 3 times a week and i do take good care of my truck because it has sentimental value to me. this motor i got and i put in a year and a half ago and its been nothing but problems. i have a cracked head on it so burns coolent. i had to bypass the egr. get a o2 sensor simulator. it would go threw 1 every 750 miles i get maybe 10-11 mpg driving 55. my dad is a tech at a gm dealership so he would help me but he's not so hot about the idea. I'm gonna buy it anyway get half done then tell him so has to help me put it in. plus i might work on cars myself for a career.

Well you certainly seem determined to do the swap. It would be great if you had a doaner vehicle so that all the components are there for you. the 6.2 would require the least amount of work in my opinion.
Good luck on the project and keep us posted with the results.
