Quickest way to pull the tranny?

So after all the work on my car, the damn internal throwout bearing is of course leaking, not sure if it blew a seal or if a fitting came loose, but long story short, the car is on its way to CMP and I may try to have a new TO bearing overnighted and pull the tranny at the track.

ANy helpful hints? Pull the tranny tunnel?


Only time I've pulled the tranny it was attached to the engine and came out in one unit!

BTW, any of your going to CMP, I'll be there @ 7-8PM thursday night, look for the big RV and come by and say hi! have a beer and we will be grilling out!

You must pull the tunnel. I've done the trans thing 3 times now.

Pull the drive shaft
Take the positive cable off of the battery
Remove the center dash panel and strap it up out of the way with the wires still attached.
Unbolt the Panoz shifter from the trans shifter and swing it to the rear
Remove the 4 bolts from the tunnel and pull up on the rear first. (mine has been modified to allow it to come out without removing the seats). When putting the tunnel back in, it helps to have some sheet metal or something to put against the seats to act like a "shoe horn". Otherwise the tunnel will want to dig into the fabric of the seats.

The trans doesn't move straight back far enough to allow it to come down. You need to wrestle with it and slide it over onto the passenger floor. Maybe you'll get lucky and be able to access your TO bearing without having to pull the input shaft all of the way out of the bell housing. It can be done in under an hour. The wrestling of the trans is the hard part.

The trans will not come out with the tunnel in place. Not unless your engine is further forward than the Ford stuff.

Thanks exactly what i was looking for! luckily the center dash panel and shifter are already out, that was the last thing i was going to do before hitting the track, so that saves me a bit of time, I'll probably remove the passenger seat to ease getting it out, and not worried if it doesn't go back in!

Exactly. Well put and saved me the typing...hehe

I have also done this MANY times at home and unfortunately at the track. Its mostly an act of wrestling than anything else. I like the shoe horn idea I never did that.
