09' malibu fails to scan

I have an 09' malibu and when i tried my memoscan 381 dignostic scanner it could not communicate. It also failed on my 08' company ford van, although it works fine on my 96' gmc pick-up. Does anyone know if the protocal has changed for the newer vehicles and can i update my scanner or do i need to invest in a newer model. I'd appreciate any info.

Maybe the new Can and not the Series communication protocol. Need new software to cover newer models.

Thanks, I noticed the later model scanner u581 has the CAN protocals added. I wanted to verify this.
