93 regal 3.1 starting problem
Starts fine when the engine is cool. After driving to work or running errands and the engine is warm, the car doesn't want to start. It acts like it doesn't have enough power to turn the motor all the way over. It starts to turn over but stops, no clicking noise or any noise whatsoever. The car has a new fuel pump, plugs and wires, crankshaft position sensor, and had a used ICM put on. Had the battery tested and they said it was good, but it is 4 years old. I'm puzzled, alternator, starter??
Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: 93 regal 3.1 starting problem
There are a couple of possibilities. First, it is possible that the cables coming from the battery are internally corroded and when you attempt to start the car the resistance in the wire goes so high that it won't turn the starter. Second, it is also possible that the battery is bad and is not producing enough amperage to continue to turn the car over after a few minutes try jumping it with another car and see what happens. Finally, there is a potential that the starter is going bad but I really doubt that since it attempts to start and then quits. One other possible issue is the starter solenoid especially since you don't get any clicks. My money is on the battery and cables.
Start with the battery cables, then battery and finally the starter. |

Re: 93 regal 3.1 starting problem
Well I got it going. Took me awhile and some frustration. But replaced the battery and cables. Ended up putting a starter in too. It is running for now. But something still isn't right. The idle keeps jumping around and sometimes goes up to about 3000 rpm's but at least it is running and i am able to drive it to work, instead of my truck that gets 10 mpg!

Re: 93 regal 3.1 starting problem
when you disconnected the battery, you erased the computer. You need to do an idle relearn so the computer can readjust itself and reset the IAC position.

Re: 93 regal 3.1 starting problem
Ok.? How would that be done. It ran fine on my test drive yesterday afternoon. BUt when I left for work it died 5 times before I turned around and went back home. It did this when I would slow down or stop.
