2001 silverado 6.0 engine has loud knock

I have a 2001 2500HD with a 6.0 and I filled it with gas and my wife was 2 hours down the road and it started pinging loudly losing power and then knocking like a diesel and died when she took her foot off the gas. Oil pressure was good, no overheating, voltage good. Now it won't even crank. Any ideas?

the pinging sounds like the engine overheated,,,as with the other symptoms...

what happens when you try to crank ? does it look like the motor seized...?

When you say it won't crank what do you mean? It turns over but won't fire or when you try and start it it won't turn over at all?

If it won't turn over it sounds like it is seized. If that is the case I'd be suspect of your oil pressure sender being faulty as it sounds like it ran out of oil.

If it turns over but won't fire I would start with the electrical such as the ignition timing based on you mentioning it "pinged".

Oil pressure never dropped below 40 but it sounds like I dropped a rod. No water in oil, but it acts like the battery is dead now. scared to try and jump it and do any more damage.

Oil pressure was good, still full of oil, no water in oil, didn't overheat, sounds like battery went dead

recharge battery / replace battery then see if it cranks/starts...
it is possible the alternator died and then the lower voltage caused this engine to stop...

alternators sometimes fail by sucking the battery power///then I have seen batteries short out sucking down the alternator to death..

usually when the first cold/very hot weather arrives batteries die.

you could also try to crank it manually first

Changed fuel filter and cleaned out the lines, charged battery, had alternator checked and it is good, won't even turn over. Suspect it may be seized. How can I tell for sure wthout dropping the oil pan?

remove the spark plugs then try to rotate the engine by hand,,,when you tried to crank engine did you check the battery voltage ???

battery may be defective [load test]
