'86 nsr500 wip
Here is my battle with the 1986 Rothmans Honda NSR500. I love this bike but will never build another (after the Moriwaki....) because I have struggled to find detailed photo's of the real one. But, I am happy to try...
![]() Chassis so far, I was a bit goofy with the putty/syringe style of welds, ignore the pin holding the chain! ![]() Bare motor with use of my favourite detailing tool, a PENCIL!! ![]() Trying to be realistic with expansion chambers, again, pencil. ![]() Speedy modelling with new mufflers, aluminium tube, with soldering wire as the bent tip (with hole drilled in) ![]() Mesh I found from a blown-up kettle (don't laugh, I scrounge!) wrapped around kit filters, I will cut around the edge to make loverly ones! ![]() Sneaky quick look at the chain, still working on it. Hopefully the bike will look like it finished a tough second place! (Lawson or Spencer probably won!) thank you.

Re: '86 nsr500 wip
Thanks! I use standard 'HB' pencil to highlight small parts like bolts or weld lines etc... it gives a 'natural' metallic shine.

Re: '86 nsr500 wip
Thankyou, everyone! A quick few shots and notes on what I'm trying to do, as for the pencil thing, just go nuts! love it! I also use powder graphite from art supplies stores, and simply brush on (can be messy!)
![]() Check out those horrible welds! HRC would fire me! will for now on use the heat-stretched plastic texturing method for welds! Here I have chosen to use wound guitar string for exhaust springs. Will use wire to make 'U' clips for them to mount onto. ![]() What a great set! A must for anyone. The blue wire will be used for the Ignition leads. ![]() A closer look at said wire, this stuff is for jewellery making. From 'Spotlight' for the locals (Robrex). ![]() Same wire but silver, for brake lines. Hopefully soon I will show some shots of the bike! not just parts! (I have children) The plan is to make the bike look well raced and worn (I think I found out why Wayne Gardner did not win the 1986 championship, must have used my bike, haha!

Re: '86 nsr500 wip
Quick update, also waiting for my copy of 'Pitwalk Photo' book of '80s NSR500.
![]() Front wheel so far, not real happy with disc's wish I got the photo etch set. ![]() Rear wheel, with 'post-race' grubby-ness. ![]() Mock-up of swing arm, yet to finish details. Let me know of any thoughts and ideas! Thanks!

Re: '86 nsr500 wip
That disc and tyre are fantastic! You should be happy with the front disk
![]() I have an idea... I didn't used it before but maybe if you apply smoke from tamiya or black diluted over the white tyre letters... that may be more real because if it is 'post-race' I doubt that the letters just keep white as any new tyre. Bye!! Roca. |

![]() A question about your "pencil" technique. Do you just brush on powder graphite, or do you use an actual pencil to do shadowing? Is this in place of a wash, or in addition to? I like the results, but would like to know more before I attempt it... Also, wouldn't the rear mudguard have been CF? They were using that back in the mid 80s in F1, so i imagine MotoGP (or whatever it was called back then) was using it as well... Daniel |
