Check engine light doesn't work

I can't pass emissions because the diagnostic check engine thing isn't communicating with the computer.

We just did an engine replacement, and I'm sure that there is something not connected, but I was wondering what range of things there are to check.

Thanks all.

Re: Check engine light doesn't work

I would guess that whoever did the work should check it....

What kind of vehicle is it?

Re: Check engine light doesn't work

it's a 96 Camry.

It's weird, because I thought that after 96 they all had to have the same standard plug for the diagnostic thing, but this has a round one...I think I may need to change something. Anyone know how much that will run?

Re: Check engine light doesn't work

I thought the 96's used the obd11. Maybe yours is a 95 and you dropped in an engine from a 96? Not sure if that's possible but just a thought. I have a 95 and there is a list of all of the sensors in the manual posted at the top. Not sure if the manual covers the 96, but there are pics showing the location of all of the sensors. Make sure they are all connected.
I don't know how your emissions test goes, but what does your check engine light have to do with passing the test? I thought they just checked the exhaust for a clean burn.

hmm, that might be it. The engine was a JDM engine, and the car might still have the 95 sensors in it.

For our emissions they read what the sensors are detecting for exhaust, in addition to putting a sensor up the tail pipe.

Any guesses on how much it might cost me to have the sensor replaced by a mechanic?

As far as I understand it would not be that easy: you need new ECU + new harness and possibly new sensors.

Hmm, this isn't sounding like that good of news. I was so excited to get the new engine in there too.
