???I have transmission issues on a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 non-turbo auto
I have transmission issues on a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 non-turbo automatic, with only 47,678 orginal miles.
I noticed right off that when 60-70 mph my rpms are at 3500 close to 4000, at 3rd gear,is this normal? No check engine light was on at the time. Only seems to go to 4th gear when I hit higher speeds. This was before, a month later I seem to go to only third gear. It won't shift to 3rd or 4th any more. Right after that my check engine light came on, which is a (p1750) shift solenoid assembly. Now I can only do 65 at 4500rpms. And also at a dead stop if I slightly hit the gas I feel a small minor jerk to catch 1st, but if I let it roll first and then hit the gas no jerk and all is well. So I change the filter and gasket , along with couple quarts of Mopar ATF +4 and i do check fluid level in neutral. Couple of days later problem still occur. Hmmm I'm lost. Am I looking at a new transmission, or something simple here? It's a ten year car. Will age play a big factor? The maintenance was kept to date, not driven hard. Thank you for your time. |

Re: ???I have transmission issues on a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 non-turbo
Just to clarify, you have already corrected the shift solenoid assembly problem?
It sounds like you have pretty much gone through the proper check list for auto tranny problems. Before jumping to the conclusion of a new tranny, I would suggest a lesser fix. Possibly a problem with the TCU? You will need to check into whether or not the TCU must be for a 2.4 or if the same TCU was used in all non-turbo DSM models. I would look into that being a possibility before replacing the tranny. If all else fails then I would look into picking up a used tranny somewhere to swap in. With only 47k miles on it, I would doubt your tranny is bad already, but it is still possible. When you changed the fluid did you notice any problems with the old fluid? Metal shavings, any chunks or debris in it?

Re: ???I have transmission issues on a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 non-turbo
Well i havent try to fix the p1750 code at all , the check engine light went off on its own, and assume it was ok from there you know. From time to time the problem still happens and let it sit for a while all is well. Is a shift solenoid a sensor? and if so where on the tranny can i find it? I do have a Chilton book but theres no location on a shift solenoid, but then again the code is a shift solenoid assembley?? Im still lost on this problem. The fluid was a bit dark than normal , some metal shavins and on the magnets. So any ideas ?

Re: ???I have transmission issues on a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 non-turbo
Were they big chunks on the magnet or just fine shavings? Did the oil smell burnt at all? I would suggest an actual transmission flush. Draining the oil out of the oil pan only drains a small amount out. Alot of fluid is still held in the torque converter. Correct me if Im wrong, but arent fine metal shavings only normal in manual transmissions, not automatics?

Re: ???I have transmission issues on a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS 2.4 non-turbo
What i need to know is how to take care the p1750 code that the OB2 is throwing you know. My transmission is auto that is 4 speed with over drive. Its been a crazy deal trying to find what a shift solenoid assembly is located on the tranny, which i also looked in my chilton book and nothing. Ive change fluid and filter, gasket also. I was told not do a power flush due to its age and mileage just to be safe. I can drive fine for a few days , and it'll happen again so ill let it sit for awhile and do it all over again. HHHmmmmmm ideas please !! thanks

Did a little reading up on that code and here are the possible things to cause it to be thrown. At least this'll give you a direction to start looking solenoid wise.
Converter clutch solenoid failed Shift control solenoid failed Pressure control solenoid failed Engine control module failed
