Most reliable cheap SUV?

I'm looking to purchase an SUV. Want to spend no more than $2500 (yeah I know)
Looking around craigslist, I find that to include mostly 1999 Ford Explorers with varying mileage from 90k up to, well, a lot... What make/model SUV would you recommend or should I just be looking for anything that is low mileage and otherwise in good shape? Lots of Jeep Cherokees too I noticed...

Re: Most reliable cheap SUV?

The Jeep Grand Chrerokees are very reliable, cannot kill the 4.0s and they run forever. You do not want the expedition, one with a 5.4 is gas hog and the tune up on them is very expensive which a 3 to 4 hour job to do.The 4.6s and 5.4s do have problems with spark plugs blowing out and coil problems with the coil on plug ignition system

Re: Most reliable cheap SUV?

I was on a hike last night and someone has a 2004 and she said she loves it too, no major problems, just regular maintenance. But you recommend only the 4.0L V6 in that model? I know they have a V8 in the Limited; I don't need a V8 for any reason anyways..

Re: Most reliable cheap SUV?

A Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 straight six! They will easily last over 200K. Of coarse the Blazer/S-10 and Exploder are decent. Geo Tracker and Sidekicks are cheap. Lots of Isuzu Rodeos at the auctions, they make the Honda Passport. Sell for a lot less than the Honda name.

Re: Most reliable cheap SUV?

What do you think:

LIKE NEW, 1998 FORD EXPLORER - $2200
NEW RADIATOR, NEW BATTERY, HOSES, BELT, ETC., WHICH COST $1,500. Ninety thousand (90,000) ORIGINAL MILES, STICK SHIFT, 2 DOOR CAR, COLD A/C . SELLING FOR ONLY $2,200. PLEASE CALL

It looks nice in the picture that's posted.. Worth going to see? Low mileage for a 1998...
