bad problems with 3100 wires / tubes

Hi all, first time post on this forum. looks like a wonderful wealth of info. Hope to see if you guys can help me out - i have a '95 Grand Prix se w/ 3100 and have a lot of heat up around EGR valve. So much heat that the EGR valve solinoids all oozed black gunk out of them, a lot of wires were melted and tubes were melted. EGR wire connector melted, back O2 Sensor connector melted away, coil pack connectors both wire-side and module side melted away, vacuum line to fuel pressure reg melted, MAP sensor melted, Vacuum to tranny modulator melted, vacuum to EVAP can melted, PCV tubing Melted. I spliced in donar harness connectors, donar coilpack, donar egr valve, donar tubing and vacuum lines, then ran to work and back yesterday and same thing started happening again, PCV tubing and FPR tube melted - A LOT of heat around EGR valve again, drivability sucked. So i thought maybe too much back pressure, so i cut a hole in the front of the cat last nite and drivabilty was very good again, this morning on way to work. I thnk my Cat is gone, i will cut it out and weld in tubing this weekend. has this happened to anyone else? am i looking in the right place? anything else that could be a suspect at fault?
i appreciate your help.
thanks \
micheal

I would agree that your converter is probably plugged, which caused the exhaust gas back-up and subsequent parts meltage.

thank you for your post. i will finish cutting the cat out then and put the pcv tubes and vacuum line back in. I am hoping i didn't destroy this egr valve. how could i know if the valve is funtional or if i have destroyed it? can i test it somehow to see if the valve works ok?

thansk again.
i appreciate your response.
good forums also!
thanks

Sorry, I forgot to welcome you in my first response, so Welcome to AF!

The EGR itself can withstand some pretty serious heat, so hook it back up and then see if any codes pop up. If not, you're good to go.
