ABS Trac Off light

I have a 99 gp gt, 85,000 mi. Lastnight randomly while driving the ABS and Trac off lights came on. Also, seemed slightly tougher to steer than normal but still had power steering. Restarted the car and back to normal, but the trac light has come on before (normal driving no tire spinning) Just wondering if lights are a prelude of things to come or nothing to worry about?

Re: ABS Trac Off light

You should get it scanned with an ABS capable scan tool. It could be a bad wheel sensor located in the hub(s), connector/wiring or the EBTCM module. When certain ABS/Chassis DTCs set it will disable the Magnasteer which would explain the tougher steering.

Re: ABS Trac Off light

I agree with Bob. With the harder steering issue, it may be more involved than the common wheel hub/sensor issue. It would be best to get it scanned to avoid throwing money away guessing.

Re: ABS Trac Off light

I had the same symptoms on my 2000 GTP a couple of years ago.

I agree with BNaylor and Richtazz: before you go spending any $$, be sure to have your car scanned with an ABS-capable scanner, so as to be sure what the issue is. Spending a bit of money up front will likely save you more in the long run.

When I had the issue, I had mine scanned with a GM Tech2 scanner at the Pontiac dealership where I bought my car new. They didn't even charge me (probably because they thought they had me on the hook for a $1,800 repair...) The Diagnostic Trouble Codes I had (C0244,C0550,P1571) pointed to a bad EBTCM.

Here's the link with my account of the symptoms I had and my solution:

Once you get it scanned, please post the codes.
