95 Talon Esi - Problem after replacing plugs and wires

Hey guys I'll be the first to state I'm a newbe to the talon world, but today i replaced the plugs and wires from the car, I put in new Champion platinum (018-3118-4) plugs and the wires are BOSCH premium wire set. Everything seemed fine during the removal and installation of new plugs and wires, I also fixed the speed sensor. Then I went for a test drive, I quickly noticed that periodically and mostly when starting from first gear that there is some hesatation like the car doesen't really want to go, and then it jerks a little and takes off. This is the first used car I have had so I really don't know what a misfire feels like but from what I have read I think the car is misfiring, but I'm not sure since this only happens during strong acceleration. I would also like to point out that I don't think I completly repaired the speed sensor since the speedometer is going all over the place now. But I think I know what is wrong there, but I don't think the bad behaviour of the car is related to the sensor, from what I read the sensor only makes the speedometer and odometer work. Any help would be great. Tommorow I think I will remove the plugs and wires and replace them just incase I did something wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to AF!

Did it hesitate before you changed the plugs? If not I would try putting different plugs in there. Most people run BKR6Es on the 420a motor.

You are correct about the speedo sensor working the speedo and odometer. Is this an auto or 5spd?

Re: 95 Talon Esi - Problem after replacing plugs and wires

I would check the gaping of the plugs again to make sure they're perfect firstly. I forget what the proper gaping for being n/t is.
As Silvr asked, was the problem there before the new plugs? If not and you still have the old plugs, put those back in and see if problem persists. That will narrow it down to the plugs. Then replace with the BKR6Es.

Re: 95 Talon Esi - Problem after replacing plugs and wires

Thanks guys, the car is a 5 speed manual, and no the problem did not occure until I changed the plugs and wires. I am about to go mess with it some more now. I read online that it was better to use copper plugs instead of platinum. I may go get a set of copper ones to. So I am off to double check the gap, then if that doesen't work, I will put in the old ones and see what I get.

PROBLEM FIXED

I removed the wires and plugs, and even though all the material and info I have suggest a gap of .035 I opened them to .040 and they work great. I even had time to fix the speed sensor. Next weekends task is to get the new seats I have for it in the car.
