The transmission drain plug is on the bottom of the tranny (as you of course know now). There is an identical fill plug on the side of the tranny. To fill, replace the drain plug, and open the fill plug. You will need a plastic hand pump to get the fluid into the fill port- you can find these pumps cheap at auto parts stores. The tranny is full when the fluid starts to seep out of the open fill port- replace the plug and you're finished.

Made sure you fill with the correct transmission fluid!! There should be a sticker on the side of the tranny body (close to the fill port) that says BMW's recommended fluid. Some BMW manual trannys (like the one in my '95 M3) require automatic transmission fluid.

Re: 318i bmw

I hope you were not planning on using the old fluid again! Get new fluid. It is a manual transmission right? They aren't hard to service at all. But you will need the above mentioned hand pump to get the new fluid back into a manual transmission. I like & use in my manual transmission Red Line products. What ever your car takes, use that product or the appropriate fluid from Mobil1. I like synthetic fluids for transmissions both automatic & manual. Hope this helps. What ever you do DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR DRY!! You won't like the repair costs as the transmissions are only available from BMW in a rebuilt exchange program worth $$$$$$$$$!
