02 Alero won't start - not passlock

Last week the security light came on solid. The next day the car would not start. It cranks, but won't fire. I checked the fuel pump relay, fuel pump fuse and many other obvious things. Researched the issue and went ahead and purchased ignition lock cylinder. After I installed it, the security was flashing this time. I proceeded with the passlock reset procedure (10 minute with key in on position) and security light quit blinking and went off. The Security light is no longer on when I try to start the car. Then tried to start and the car cranked, but still won't fire. I sprayed ether in the air cleaner to determine if car was getting spark and it fired. Fuel system never pressurizes. Is resetting the passlock system the same as resetting the BCM with a Scan Tool? My next step currently is to call a dealer to have them reset the code unless someone has some other advice. Please help!

Re: 02 Alero won't start - not passlock

The problem was the fuel pump. My advice when troubleshooting this problem in the future...If security light isn't flashing, don't get caught up in the passlock fixes. Take a quick look at the BCM (under dash and glove box on passenger side) to determine if condensation has corroded the connectors. (in my case, the BCM had some type of water proofing layer on top of the componets as protection from moisture and the board was perfectly dry). Check voltage on fuel pump. I did a quick check at the fuel pump fuse in the engine compartment. You could also check at the fuel pump to determine if it's receiving 12V DC. One other note...the car started making a weird buzzing / vibration noise (my wife began calling it the buzzsaw) leading up to the fuel pump failure. Once the fuel pump was replaced, the noise went away. I hope that this helps someone in the future.

The fuel pump relay under the hood can make a buzzing noise if its failing or got wet power washing the engine also.
