Clicking when decelerate

Hi i have a 1995 jetta gl with a 5 speed and whenever i slow down the transmission starts to make a clicking noise. I noticed that if i keep it at a steady speed or accelerate it stays quiet but of course when I'm slowing down it comes right back. This noise happens no matter what gear it is in and no matter what speed. This even occurs if it is in neutral or the clutch is released. Any help would be appreciated.

The clicking ticking noise sounds like lifter noise. Oil my not be getting to the lifters and thus making a clicking or ticking noise. Check your oil level and if its good, it may need an oil change. These engine are prone to sludge so you may also need to use a engine cleaner during the oil change. Fill to normal level do not over fill. Also check your timing belt.

I would agree however this noise only occurs when i'm moving. I'm almost 100% sure that it has something to do with my transmission. I'm just hoping it's not a chipped gear. Plus i removed my valve cover about 3k ago to replace the gasket. I'm also running synthetic since 10k ago and i only have 55k on the car. Long story short I still think it has something to do w/ the tranny.

Ok. It seems your not a beginner with autos. This happens a lot here. If you're sure the sound is transmission related your in luck, that it is relatively cheap to change your clutch. Pressure plate, shifter, throw out bearing, flywheel are common issues. It you bought this vehicle pre-owned you may have premature clutch wear. This is one of those noises that i would have to be there to get a further diagnosis. Hear is a link to clutch parts.

Sadly I changed all of those parts out about 4k ago. I think it may be low on fluid and the click only goes away because when i increase / stay steady the oil is being thrown up on the disgruntled gear. I just purchased some so we'll see. If it's not that the only thing i can think of would be a chipped gear. That means either i'll be rebuilding a tranny soon or buying a new on... I'll reply on where once i test my oil theory.

badly, sadly.

Well i put more fluid into it and nothing really changed. Now I want to try one more thing before i go tearing apart the tranny and such. I didn't have a torque wrench and I'm thinking maybe by some weird action the bolts from the output shaft of the tranny to the cv-joint on the drive shaft are a little loose and when the engine is applying pressure there is not problem and then when i let it go they wobble and make the noise. I'm pretty sure that it's wishful thinking but i need something to hang onto before I cry b/c i have to pull apart my tranny. Anywho I'll check it out on thurs.

Solved:

Not fixed, Solved... I actually talked to the guy from vwtransaxles.com and he was very informative. Either way I have something under one of my bearings. from 91-93 they were having a problem w/ one of the bearings failing (i forgot which one he was talking about) then in 94 they changed it so that there was a piece attached inside the transmission that would divert some of the flow of the fluid under the bearing and keep it in good shape. I already knew i had a noise when in reverse and that is b/c one of the reverse gears is chipped. W/ the new piece in place (to divert the flow) some of those chips were diverted under the bearing messing it up. So i hear bearing wear every time i decelerate.

So pretty much I think I'm going to order a new tranny from the guy I talked to or rebuild my own. I dn yet. Money will decide my fate...

I personally would order a new kit and change out all parts. Most tranny shops will install for around $150. So shop around for the best deal and let them do all the work.
