Engine Whistle

Ok, I have run the gabit of typical Crap from my Impala. From crazy temp gauges to fuel floats that don't float. well, here's a new one for me.

When I accelerate, at high RPMs I hear a high pitched whistle, sounds kinda like a turbo but since my sedan is turbo-less I am at a loss to what is causing this problem.

Also, the motor seems sluggish.

I have a 2001 Impala LS 90k miles. It is on it's 3rd transmission and if this is gonna cost me alot to fix, then I am gonna go to town on it with my mossburg.

Please don't tell me to take it to a mechanic, I want to do this myself.

Thanks.

Re: Engine Whistle

Is it shifting through the gears? Can you hear it shift from 1 to 2 to 3 etc.? How many RPM's are we talkin at 55mph? you should be under 2,000. Just want to clarify if its stuck in a gear or not.

Re: Engine Whistle

It is not stuck in gear. It is during aggressive acceleration so higher rpms but it is shifting just fine.

Re: Engine Whistle

Its a constant whistle or does it change with RPM. Lets say you put your foot into it and its fine until a certain RPM then you get an upshift and it goes away until it hits a certain RPM again?

That sounds about right but with no Tac I don't know what the RPM is.

Re: Engine Whistle

Put it in second gear drive it until you hear the noise. Let off the gas. Does the noise go away or does it continue. If it continues shift it into neutral (in a place where this can be done safely!!!) does it go away know?

If it continues and then goes away in nuetral I think its safe to say that the noise is coming from the transmission. I'm no expert on transmissions but there are many on here that are. As soon as one of them sees this I'm sure they will chime in.

5 of the last 20 impalas i had was doing the same, think there was a recall on some of the 03-04's,the throttle body leaks on them and they start to whistle, they are common for it

Re: Engine Whistle

Sometimes when I`m idling, I can hear a slight whistling from my car. Off and on for the last year.

Re: Engine Whistle

If you can hear a WHISTLE while in NUETRAL and idle, Theres a possibility it's Just dirty passages inside the throttle body.

If you hear the WHINE (Like a turbo) while in Gear ONLY, Could be the transmission.

If you hear the WHINE in Park or Nuetral, Check your Power steering Fluid, Might be a little low.

This might help, The Turbo/SC Whine like sound you hear is My Power steering pump (Low fluid):

Re: Engine Whistle

i have an 01 impala LS, i'm not sure if they made LS's without tacometers though.... what is your motor size just to be sure.

anyways, my impala has a whistle/whine as well, if i'm in park and rev it i can hear it rather well, i believe it to be my alt. it has always done it and i have never had a power issue of any kind. so until a problem arises i say if it runs don't f@$k with it. noise doesn't hurt anything.... just be aware of changes in the noise.

hope i helped.
Sincerely,
Impala Racer

Re: Engine Whistle

Ya I just realized what he said, I've never seen a REAL Ls without a Tac. and Speedbump I bet its your Throttle body. Mine Whistles line a Son-b***h On Winter days when the IAC is up @ ~1600RPM.

Re: Engine Whistle

I miss spoke before, it is not an LS it is just the standard sedan. And like i said the transmission has now started shifting funny so the whistle is no longer my main concern.

Re: Engine Whistle

my throttle body makes the god awful sucking sound before it warms up. even in the summer in the morning or if it has sat for awhile. motor warms up and it goes away. but the whistle/whine i have i am pretty certain is my alt. it's over in the serp. belt system, sounds top side around the alt. so thats what i'm goin with lol.

Thank you,
Impala Racer

Re: Engine Whistle

Thanks for all the help. it turned out to be a clogged Cat. Would much rather a $130 fix as opposed to a new tranny.
