heater fan works when it wants to.

My heater fan goes on and of .... of most of the time. I was told this was the ground wireanyone know were this wire might be?

you must give details...what year ,,,
most times its the blower motor or resistors that feed the motor...remove motor and check for proper feed and grounds,,,resistors burn't/ defective,,
could also be the switch if its always the same position ...

with a volt/ohm meter this is not difficult..

Mine did that. After going to the dealership, I was told my control panel was bad, my resistor was bad, etc (they wanted $600, I said no). It was none of that. My blower motor was bad. When it wouldn`t run, I would "tap it on the bottom" and it would start, after a while it gave up the ghost. I went to Nordstroms on Ebay and for $35, got a fan motor from an Impala salvage with low miles and a guarantee. It`s worked great ever since.
