Question Gas spewing into front exhaust manifold pipe

Throw some possible reasons at me. Why would this be happening?

*I don't want this thread to focus on it per say so I can get good answers, but is it possible for a spark plug to "blow out" and no longer ignite, thus gas just flows out? I ask cause I've never heard of a spark plug just not functioning.

Beyond wits end.

Re: Gas spewing into front exhaust manifold pipe

A spark plug can fail to.....spark for a number of resons.
It could be a defective spark plug, defective spark plug wire, or defective coil.
On the windstar, a defective PCM would cause 2 spark plugs to not fire.

Fuel coming out the exhaust port(s) could also be caused by a defective fuel injector, or grounded wire that goes to the PCM (as in pinched), or a injector drive output on the PCM being shorted to ground.

In all cases.....gasoline going into the exhaust manifold is a BAD thing as it will burn in the catalytic converter......damaging it.......or even starting a fire from all the heat.
This is why the CEL will flash in any detected misfire......as it is really bad to continue driving if the misfire is a condition that puts unburned fuel into the exhaust.

Question Re: Gas spewing into front exhaust manifold pipe

I'm not getting a CEL. Would this mean the PCM is busted?

I pulled spark plug #6 today and it was wet with fuel and black and it's only 10k miles old, but was also in my old engine. I am hoping the old injectors being faulty and wiring shorted issues that were resolved have fixed this condition and that new plugs will resolve my issues. The plug wires were replaced with the plugs 10k miles ago. I wonder if they went bad too. Ugg.

Re: Gas spewing into front exhaust manifold pipe

Not sure how you know there is excess unburn fuel in the exhaust manifold. Is there a DTC, or some other direct evidence?

A malfunctioning ignition system would show up as a misfire and possibly a "rich on bank..." DTC.

A stuck open injector would certainly lead to misfires and a rich DTC.

I don't see that high fuel pressure within the limits of the pump could be the cause, but it could produce a rich mixture.

This probably isn't much help, but those are my guesses right now.

Exclamation Re: Gas spewing into front exhaust manifold pipe

Thanks Tom.

There is fuel on the ground and I've located where its coming out (ypipe meets exhaust manifold). So no question.

I think the NEW PCM got fried like the old one did from damaged wiring that has since been repaired.
