RPMs ticking then car dies??

Whenever I drive my car around it starts out normal. Then after driving it for a little bit the needle on the tachometer will start to dip and rise very sporadically. It does this mildly in the begining until the needle starts going up and down very violently and the car dies (it always manages to be on a main road -_-). I don't know where I would even begin to look for the problem, any ideas or similar issues??

What car and motor? It would be helpful if you put your car and all its mods in your sig.

So the car does this while your sitting at idle? Or when your driving down the road to? Auto or manual trans?

Do you have a check engine light? Have you changed the plugs, wires, etc. lately? I would also test the IAC motor. Will the car run if you keep tapping the throttle?

Re: RPMs ticking then car dies??

Yes when it starts stalling the check engine light comes on. I recently took the plugs out to clean them but I didn't replace anything. Yeah the car will stay alive if I keep giving it gas. I changed the air filter a few days ago and that seemed to help...today I took out the throttle body and it was completely covered with black soot..I also took out the intake manifold and gave them both a good cleaning...I got the intake manifold back on but I need a throttle body gasket before I can finish putting everything back together. Hopefully that will help. I found the IAC and cleaned it off a little but how would I get it tested? Thanks for the advice!
