Intake gasket or Head Gasket??? Help!!
I have a 93 grand am gt, 3.3l v6. it's blowing white smoke and my oil is mayo color. I removed the intake and the valley was full of that mayo looking fluid. I thought it was a head gasket, but now I'm not sure??? Don't want to go futher tearing things apart if I dont have to and just want to confirm if it's the intake gasket or should i move on. Need to finish this project soon as it's my only ride and need it up an running quick. thanks for the help in advanced.

Re: Intake gasket or Head Gasket??? Help!!
It is possible that just the intake gasket was bad and drawing water through a port into a combustion chamber causing the white smoke. Pull the spark plugs and see if you can find evidence of water on any of the plugs. If there is a lot of water in any one cylinder then check the intake port at the head to see if you can find water in the port. If there is no evidence then I would go ahead and pull the head and change the gaskets. You don't want to have to pull everything apart again.

Re: Intake gasket or Head Gasket??? Help!!
Thank's for your help, I will pull the plugs and check those and the ports, however do I understand correctly that if they are dry and show no evidence of water infiltration in the cylinders then i'm ok to just replace the intake gasket?? and if there is water in those places then yes i should replace the head gaskets, thanks for the clarification in advance.

ok, checked the plugs and found one that was wet, however the port is dry and just has a white residue in the area of the intake port similar to having water burn in a pot and you get that calcium residue on the pot. i guess the head gaskets need replacement too?????

Re: Intake gasket or Head Gasket??? Help!!
That would be an excellent idea given the fact that there was water in one cylinder. If the intake gaskets don't correct the white smoke issue then you will have to pull everything apart again. This way you only have to do it once and everything should be fine when you put it back together.
Make sure to use new head bolts when you put the engine back together due to the fact that they are torque to yield otherwise all your work will be for nothing. |
