Can you "jiggle" your rotor on the rotor hat?

Just curious... I used to be able to jiggle the rotor some when the car was sitting still. In the GTS manual it states the torque value for the bolts holding the rotor to the hat and says you need to leave some play to allow the rotor to grow when hot... makes sense to me.

Now that I've got the car back from the shop for it's major overhaul the rotors are tight to the rotor hat. Is this "ok" or is this something I need to go and address? We had them install fresh hubs w/ new rotors and new front spindles.

Just curious if this is something where it really doesn't matter how it is, or does it need to be addressed? I have a habit of being ultra-detail oriented (read anal), but hey I'm an analyst by trade so its suites me.

if they used the correct rotor to hat hardware you cannot overtighten and remove the small amount of slop unless they added washers or something. These are specific rotor to hat hardware that gaurantees the play needed. I dont reuse the hardware when changing rotors. On the brembos the hardware is not cheap. About $6-10 for the bolt, washer, and recieving sleeve (nut) each multiply by about 10 sets a rotor....I havent found aftermarket ones. The PF's rotors are similar but I have found aircraft hardware thats cheaper. Its EXTORTION but thats racing!

Ok... pulled the wheels. The RF and LR rotor still wiggle. The LF and RR ones are pretty much fixed. It's possible that the brand new rotors are being held in place by the pads because they're thicker. We'll see.

Brian, I wouldnt worry about it to much. Mine do have movement in them sometimes and dont at others. I have had mine apart and there is no issue, it just depends on the stack up of tolerances between the mounting holes and hardware. A couple of little burrs on the loaded edges of the mounting studs will stop the rotor from having freeplay but this will not stop the arrangement from working dynamically when it is loaded under race conditions.

I have raced with rotors that were solidly bolted to a cast iron hub. The car was a lot faster in a straight line than the Panoz is currently and was a lot scarier!! Sometimes the rotors would crack from the mounting holes due to the differing heatloads induced on either side of the rotor. Needless to say I checked those disc mounting holes a lot!

I'm not overly concerned now that I've pulled the wheels and inspected. The tech marked each fastener with a grease pencil as it was tightened torqued, so I know they weren't in there tightening things willy nilly.

Not sure if this applies, but the "new" GTS rotors (gold hubs) use differant hardware and on my car are much tighter...still some movement, but not as "wiggley" as the older black hubbed rotors. The old ones would rattle in the paddoc when cold. They should have stop ridges on them to prevent "pinching" the rotor. The rears are the old style and have much more slop.

We just put new coleman rotor rings on the existing hats.

PN's from Panoz... I'm not sure which is right and which is left. I'm still trying to visually differentiate between the F & R rotors. I'll look into it more when I get home tonight. Also, they're not Coleman's... They're Performance Friction.

does anyone know why PAD used Performance Friction rotors on everything but the GTS and those got brembos? I know my brothers GTS has Performance Friction rear rotors and they have outlasted 3-1 to the brembo rears on my car. They are like the energizer bunny of rotors.....

Yeah... they last wonderfully... the ones we had on the car were pretty much fine and I've kept them as spares.

I heard a rumor that PFC was not going to make our Rotors any more. Anyone hear that? I have not called them to find out, I thought I would ask here first.
