I'm new to the New Beetle world and not sure what is normal on these cars yet. I have a 1998 beetle, only 106,000 kms, with 2.0 engine and standard transmission. With the revs under 2000 rpm, I have to keep a light foot on the throttle or it bucks, or hesitates. It seems to happen when warm or cold, but perhaps a little more when cold. Happens in any gear. Once the revs are over 3000 it can take any amount of throttle with no problem and has good acceleration. I work at a mechanic's shop, but have no experience with any VWs.

Re: Beetle Bucking under acceleration
I would look at the air boots, if the boots are ok, look at your maf.

Re: Beetle Bucking under acceleration
I would first look for check engine codes, then check for vacuum leaks make sure spark plugs and air filter are clean, then clean the iac and maf, replace fuel filter

Re: Beetle Bucking under acceleration
I am in no way mechanically-inclined, but my 2000 Beetle (1.8L Turbo) was just doing the exact same thing that you are describing. I took it in and they said that cylinder #1 was misfiring. They replaced a coil pack and a couple of sparkplugs for just under $100 and now it runs just fine.

Re: Beetle Bucking under acceleration
My daughters did the same thing. We changed the MAF and coil pac, wires and plugs. Problem went away and car runs great.
