strange noise

I have a 2001 Grand Am GT. I noticed a few weeks ago that toward the very end of my braking I occasionally (more times than not) hear a strange sound coming from the right side of my car. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where it is coming from. The noise itself is hard to describe; the best I can do is compare it to a chirping sound, or maybe a squeak, but not quite. It's not a grinding or any sound that I would directly attribute with bad brakes. Furthermore, I just got new brake pads, all new tires, AND had a general/ safety inspection on my entire car back in March so I'm very annoyed by this; the last thing I need right now is to be forking more money over to the service department at Pontiac. So any advice/help would be appreciated. Is this something I could cautiously ignore for now, or perhaps fix on my own? Thanks

Re: strange noise

Could just be the brake pads, maybe they didnt use any anti squeek stuff. Or if the pads are on(backwards) with the wear indicators on the outside of the rotor, that can make some noise. The wear indicator goes on the inside of the rotors.

Oh and they might not have greased the slide pins of they are seazed up.
When they are seazed they will make a funny squeal at the end of your braking.
Try pushing the brake just sitting in park.

How long ago did they install your brakes ?
I'd call them if it's not been to long, and complain!

Re: strange noise

I would go back to where you had the brakes and ask them to drive it with you. If they are a quality shop they should at least check into it without charging you. Also, what was the condition of the rotors when you had the pads replaced?

Re: strange noise

Well i had a problem with my moms Kia Spectra 2004. When i drove it there was a wierd squeking noise when i was in first and second gear. I relized that it was the belt. But the chances are it is your brake pads.

Re: strange noise

I got the new brake pads over two months ago and this noise has only been happening for a few weeks. Like I said, I had a complete inspection of my car when I had the brake pads replaced. The rotors and everything else checked back okay. There is no noise when I am pushing the brake in park. Also, it seems like the first couple times I brake after I've started my car it doesn't make the noise either; it starts doing it after a couple uses of the brake. My overall braking seems just fine. I'll probably just take the advice of going back to the dealer and hoping they don't charge me. I guess I'm just wondering if this is something serious I should take care of ASAP. It's really hard for me to find the time to get to a dealership right now and leave my car with them for who knows how long.

Re: strange noise

well ok...more information: it doesn't make the noise when I brake in reverse either.

and on my way to work this morning it only "squeaked" once. there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to this.

If the brake pads were faulty or put on backwards wouldn't the noise be a lot more consistent?
