Which brakes?
Hey all.
I was curious what kind of brake pads and rotors you recommend. I was looking into getting ceramic pads, and wanted to know if anyone has them and what they think about them, too. I have had three front brake replacements in three years from the rotors warping. And what gets me is I drive like a grandma going to church on most days in the city. And I also had the calipers lubricated each time to prevent stuck calipers with no change to them warping. And if you are curious, I had them done twice at the dealer, and the most recent time done at Midas which are the best so far. |

Re: Which brakes?
Are the pads wearing out in that short of time too? Driving the way you say should'nt warp them that fast. Sounds like something else is going on with the brakes. I installed mine with rotors and pads from autozone over a year ago and they are still like new, and I am hard on them ( a lot of deer out my way). If you were driving like a mad man I'd go with some slotted or drilled rotors for extra cooling, but you should only need regular vented rotors for the way you drive. I just have semi-metallic pads and regular vented rotors.

Re: Which brakes?
Check into cyrogenic rotors. We have tested these on some of our cruisers and had good results. Cost is not really that much more than a quality rotor. We experienced longer pad life, almost zero brake fade and no warpage.

Re: Which brakes?
The pads are not wearing out as fast. I had all the wheels off today to replace shocks and checked all the brakes. The rear brakes are fine after 20,000 miles as I figured since they do minimal braking. The front pads aren't worn down too much, however the front driver rotor shows some signs of warpage. I can feel it in the pedal but just slightly, so they're good for now. I always suspected the driver side front being problematic as I always hear a noise as if the caliper was moving while braking and very loud squealing.
Also, the front driver caliper does wiggle a bit when pushed on. I noticed it when my friend who was helping me rested his arm on it while we were bleeding the brake lines with fresh fluid. Is a little movement ordinary, or is something loose/worn/broken? All of the bolts seemed tight. way2old, I saw those on the site I got my shocks from and they were in my top 2 choices. I will probably be getting these once I solve the underlying issue as to why my brakes go so quickly. Thanks for your input though. That probably just sold me on those

Re: Which brakes?
Lubing the calipers doe not fix everything. Sometimes the piston will stick in the bore from dirt or rust. This will cause them to not retract all the way after stepping on the brakes causing the pads to drag, creating heat, and warping the rotors. Just a thought. The pistons were sticking and warping the rotors on my new 03 Dodge truck (and lots of others) to the point Dodge issued a service bullitin to replace the calipers free for anybody that complained. My daughter's 03 had the brakes replaced twice before the bullitin came out. After they replaced the calipers, no more problem.
