New Noise...

Hello all, I have a new noise in My 2000 Silverado. To me it sounds like the water pump Bearings or impeller is having a problem. However if you leave the truck Idel it will go away. When you first start it the sound is very noticeable. When standin in front of the truck on the passenger side it is really loud but once again it goes away (seems like it goes away when the termostate opens). The water pump is probably less than a year old, I would have to check to see when I bought it. Any Ideas from my breif description?

It might just be the serpentine belt. Many times the noise is louder during the warm up period from the alternator being under load re-charging the battery.
You may be able to isolate you noise by taking the tension off the belt and check idler pulley bearings, alt bearings and water pump as well.
If the belt is cracked or contaminated, It would be a good idea to have it replaced.

Thanks for the response. I looked at the serpentine belt and it is shiney. That could be from the routing though. How do you take the tension off to see if it could be bearings? I was planning on taking it to the dealer as I dont havea or know a good mechanic. The truck has 118,000 miles on it so I know itsgoing to make new noises its just this one is so loud that I think its more than just age..

You will need to locate the tensioner pulley asm. It will have a square hole in it that you can put a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet in the hole and rotate the assembly to free up the belt. The description of the belt, sounds like a replacement is in order. look under the hood for a sticker that shows the correct routing of the belt. If it's missing perhaps your local supplier could be of assistance.

I dont know if the attachment will work but you may have the tensioner that you use a wrench on the plley bolt to free up the belt

The Serpentine belt I dsaved money on and went cheap and that I will not do again since it runs almost everything. I appreciate you comments and I will try the relaxing fo the tension tomorrow night when I get home from work. When I let the motor cool off and restart the truck the noise seems to be coming from the front of the water pump but there are several pulleys in that area.

since I have a 2000 silverado 5.3l engine this noise is probably the idler pulley bearings...my pulley bearings make noises sometimes ....since 2000 when I purchased...

what is important is using the correct belt....length and width are very important...the idler tensioner has a mark on it ...this should line up with the other non movable mark....

using a shorter belt WILL damage your other componet bearings as well..

to find out what is making the noise use a hose one end in your ear the other probing the areas you want to listen to....


if you go to the dealer be prepared for a good amount to pay.. good luck..

The Tensioner marks are in between the lines so it appears to be a good fit. It is not a factory direct belt though as it came from the auto parts store itself. I will give the hose thing a try since the Dealership has not got back with me about bringing it in. I am sure that it is something simple as I take good care of the truck. I just cannot afford to go and by a new truck and want to head off problems as quickly as I can.

the pulley bearings are about 20.oo ea....the tension idler pulley is the reverse thread I believe ,,,,the other pulley is ccr to remove...

Good News all. Turned out to be minor (to a degree) the Tensioner Pulley Bearings were beginning to wear out. New Tensioner pulley assembly and all is well in the 2000 Silverdo again. Thats for the suggestions they worked very well in diagnosing which pulley was making the noise...
