Re: 2002 Mazda Protege 2.0
It's difficult to say exactly how to solve the problem. Some diagnostic work is required to find the specific item needing service or repair.
Here are some links that may help. http://repairpal.com/OBD-Code-P0171-and-P0174 http://www.aa1car.com/trouble-codes/page3.htm http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171 Clifton |

Re: 2002 Mazda Protege 2.0
Almost every time I've run across a P0171 error it's been because of a vacuum leak. A typical cause is a dry rotted hose. One time I had the error because of the connector between the hose to the pcv valve and the intake boot. Another time was because of the intake boot (tube, whatever). I fixed a friends truck and it was caused by a vacuum hose that went from one valve cover to the pcv valve. Other possibilities usually give additional error codes.

Re: 2002 Mazda Protege 2.0
Just had mine come on after I changed my gas cap to an aftermarket, didn't seal tight and had check engine show up...not sure what the code was but just throwing it out there.
