i have a 454 1972 chevorlet engine withought and alternator. i am trying to find the correct amount of amperage that i would need for the new alternator. thanks for the help

Use the one that came with your car. Unless you added a big stereo or other goodies.

A quick check at the auto parts store says that the original is 63amp. If your planning on running HEI or performance ignition a larger alt would'nt hurt. A larger alt may drag some HP form you but you'll probably not notice. As metioned earlier, if you plan to have a great sound system w/amps and subs ect, bigger would be better.

Forget what the stock requirements are for that motor in that car. You should add up the entire amperage requirements of all the electrical components on your car. How much ampers is your alternator gonna need to be putting out for your ignition system and the wipers and air conditioning and all the lights on and stereo and any other add-ons you may have or plan on adding. Go with the most powerful one you can afford and get a lifetime warranty with it.
