92 camry won't go

My 92 camry had something pop behind the front right wheel in a left turn. The tranny turns but the wheel won't. There is a clinking when I towed it home @ 2 miles in neutral with the engine running. Is this the cv? The boot is torn. That seems to be a symptom from what I've read. The descriptions are different so I'm not sure. This is our backup vehicle. I'm not flush with money and I've turned a few wrenches. The AF even paid me to turn a few wrenches for 4 yrs. Is this something I could possibly tackle or are there special tools involved? TIA

Re: 92 camry won't go

um remove the wheel and inspect it 1st... i guessed you did that already

boot torn from the cv halfshaft/ driveshaft = get a rebuilt unit

just tell the parts guy if it has ABS or not on that vehicle...

guess you know how to remove the lower ball joint/ and tie rod / and to slide off the hub to pull out the axle already... there's free online manuals for this vehicle on the internet

you can rent the big specialized axle nut socket if you don't have one as well

"there's free online manuals for this vehicle on the internet"

There are free online manuals for this vehicle on this site. They are stickied at the top of this forum's home page. Download the generation 3 manual.

Yes it does sound like a broken CV joint.

Re: 92 camry won't go - DONE

Hey everyone. I changed the cv drive axle all by myself. It took me @ 4 hrs from start to finish, including dinner, because I took my time to look ahead since I had never done this before. The next time might take 1 1/2 hrs. I had to search, borrow and make do with the wrenches I could find, but got thru it safely and effectively. It has been on the road for a week and so far so good. Thanks for the encouragement and info.
