Code PO404

Check engine light came on today. Stopped by Advance Auto to get scanned and it came up PO404. Looked up and it said EGR circuit, open position performance problem. Car has 144,500 miles. Appreciate any input or suggestion any of you may have.

Re: Code PO404

If you have a 1996 with a 3.1 L it is:

Egr flow pintle position was over 15 % different than the desired position commanded by the PCM.

If you have a 1999 with a 3.4L it is a 20 % difference.

Basically it could be the EGR pintle position sensor or circuit, or EGR valve or solenoid. Should have a TECH that you trust troubleshoot it.

The above information is from MPC Smart Spec 2003.

Re: Code PO404

Yeah your engine size and year should be listed.

But either way Id pop the EGR off and look into the intake, the exhaust tube for carbon build up. Clean those out with some carb cleaner and or whatever to scrape the build up out.
Then see if it clears up.

If its a 1999+ grand am I have a test procedure for the EGR in the Tips and Maintenance subforums.

Re: Code PO404

Sorry about that. It's a '03 with a V6 3.4 L engine.

Re: Code PO404

SES light came back on yesterday, same code, so I'll definitely be taking a closer look at the EGR valve now.

Re: Code PO404

Wound up replacing the EGR valve about a week after my last post. Also sprayed carb cleaner to clean around the area also. Code has not come back. About a week later, though, code P0300 came up. Replaced the spark plug wires and that took care of that code, hasn't reappeared since.
