Key is stuck in the ignition

I have a 2003 blazer and sometimes the key won't release from the ignition. It seems like the car is in neutral because the key turns about 3/4 the way back and then stops. If i let it sit for 15 min. then the key will come out with no problem.????? Is there a sensor on the shifter or what could it be??????

It's a bad lock cylinder, or possibly a bad neutral safety switch, though I don't see the NSS keeping it from turning backwards.

I don't believe it is either of these problems. My truck does the same thing. I believe it is the brake pedal/shifter interlock solenoid. I am not saying you should rush out and change it because it may not be bad, it is possibly just not working properly. I plan on tearing into mine in the next month or so, it is a pain when it does this.

Not sure if the '03 steering column is the same as '95 to '97s, but take a look and see if you have this set-up.

There's a solenoid that actuates to allow the key to turn back from the "on" position to the "off" position. This solenoid is a safety feature to prevent the steering wheel from lock-up in case of an accidental turn-off while driving; it's linked to the shifter solenoid, which has to be in Park in order to remove the key.

On the underside of the steering wheel cover, directly below the key tumbler, is a hole about 3/8". remove the plug that covers this hole, take a pencil or long narrow screwdriver, and push it up that hole until you can feel the solenoid weight. This should allow you to remove the key.

I had the same problem in my 01 xtreme. Tired lubing the solenoid in the steering column and even bought a new one and it stuck as well. I ended up taking the solenoid out and going without. It works fine just have to make sure its in park and parking brake is set when I get out or it will roll if not on level ground.
