Question 2002 Taurus problem

I am trying to figure out what the problem my sister in law is having with her car. She is complaining that her heat/air only works when she is pressing on the accelerator. It blows out of the vents but it is neither hot or cold umtil she accelerates.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Re: 2002 Taurus problem

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure I understand her complaint. Is it that if she has the temp selector turned for heat, she doesn't get high heat until she is accelerator. Likewise, if she has A/C selected she doesn't get cold air until she accelerates? Does her Taurus have manual or electronic HVAC controls? Does the engine idle fine or does it have a rough idle? Has she checked the level of coolant in the overflow tank?

Check coolant level in rad or overflow tank. If coolant is low the heater core because it is higher than the engine will drain out,so it will blow cold air. And when she steps on the gas she is forcing the coolant back up into the heater for that quick burst of heat. Taurus 3.0l engines are known for slow leaks of the coolant. Good luck.
