Drive Axle / CV

I'm gonna replace my bad axle. It makes a clunking noise. Is it just an axle what I need, or do I need some other parts. I was wondering if the noise can be a bad input axle bearing.

Re: Drive Axle / CV

Generally a CV shaft won't make a clunking noise, it makes a popping noise that shows up or gets worse when you turn either way. If it is in fact the CV joint, you need the whole shaft. You can rebuild it, but I can't offer help there, it's cheaper for the customer to buy a new part than to pay to have it rebuilt at the shop so I've never done one. When does it make the clunk? The front lower control arm bushing (with the vertical bolt through it) is known for failing and letting metal hit metal. If this is it, save yourself some time and take the control arms to have them pressed out and the new ones pressed in. It can take hours to get them with a hammer sometimes. Also check tie rod ends and ball joint, but those usually have to be REALLY bad before they make noise

Re: Drive Axle / CV

It only makes noise when turning right. And makes a low noise when driving straight ahead. But it seems to come from the Front center of the car. And maybe it is just me, but I think I feel the car making some vibrations on a certain speed, or when pushing the brake.

It really sounds more like the bearing.
