92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
I have a 92 olds 88 3.8L that stalls at times after getting off interstate or stopping at lights. Codes 13, 44 and now 65. This is the engine that has no egr valve and code 65 points to that. Ignition components are good, plugs, wires etc. New o2 sensor and IAC module. all vacuum lines replaced and checked for leaks around plenum. Cleaned out pcv valve. Car runs mint, just wants to stall occasionally. Any thoughts? Was going to clean out throttle body this weekend but htought I'd get other idea's as well.
Thank's in advance |

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Welcome to AF. 13 and 44 are a bad 02 sensor. Forget 65, if no egr. If it has an egr it could be carboned up and causing the stall, yes clean the TB and iac and passages.

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Thanks for the quick responce. Absolutely no EGR valve, unless it's hidden. I thought I would throw the old Snapon 2500 brick at it this weekend and check the TPS values as well but I'll be on Chemo this weekend so I'll see how it goes. Any Idea on fuel pressure psi range? 110,000. miles, might be getting weak.
Thanks |

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Sorry I forgot to say that I have tried 2-o2 sensors. No change, same codes came back after clearing & 3 weeks of driving. Daughters car and she's got a heavy foot. I'll be checking her reaction time soon!

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Those codes definitely point to the sensor or associated wiring. Get it on the scvanner and look at the o2 activity. 37-42 psi on the fp.

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Today I checked TPS voltage .48-1.62. o2 sensor Mv 6-896 but showed rich condition only until I shielded the o2 sensor wire away from plug wire. Then I was getting rich/lean condition. that could be a possable solution to the codes 13 & 44. Removed vacuum from fuel pressure regulator and this seemed to change the engine speed as well. Havent checked fuel pressure yet. Cruise control switch was in the on posistion which might explain the code 65 which does'nt apply to this year car, but does apply to the 91 & 93 years. (cruise control servo posistion) Hmmm. In any case I will keep you posted on the results after car gets driven for a while. All the other sensors seemed to be in line.

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
I re-checked the o2 sensor readings and they seem to be all over the place. It was'nt until the car ran fro a while that the o2 sensor cross counts started to change. (0-19) I wonder if this o2 sensor is lazy. It just does'nt seem to be stable. during the test proceedure it seemed to go dead. Then I restarted the car and it came alive again. Bosch sensor? These sensor have a tin shield which makes the wire come out very close to the ignition wires. I'm going to try another one (Echlin) and see what that does.

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
If the engine idles too long the sensor cools down and goes to open loop, don't be fooled by this on your scanner.

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Thanks for the onfo. I'll keep tinkering until I get it right. Then I'll post the remedy. I'm hoping that the throttle plate and orfice cleaning will be the ticket.

Re: 92 olds 3.8 stall intermittant
Finally got around to cleaning the throttle body and iac passages. Throttle body had quite a bit of carbon around plate and bore. Car has'nt stalled in 2 days now and no codes!
Earlier I reported a code 65 which went away by turning off the cruise control switch. Will keep you posted with any more details if they arise.
