Engine swap help!!!

I have a 2004 pontiac grand am with a toasted 3.4 v6. I can get a wrecked 2001 grand am with a 3.4 v6 that appears to be the same in every way. The vin display "e" as the 8th digit for both. Will the 2001 engine work for the 2004 car? The car my be a 2003, I don't have it near me at the moment.
