1997 GTP A.C. compressor question
My daughters 1997 GTP air conditioner doesn't work (no cold air) I charged it with a can and a half of freon, started blowing cold air, but it is leaking green oil (lots of oil) at the pulley side of the compressor.
My question is, can the compressor leak oil out of the pulley seal? Does this mean another compressor or is there something simple to change/replace? Thanks in advance. |

Re: 1997 GTP A.C. compressor question
The answer is yes. The seal on the compressor is bad and you will need another compressor to repair the AC. I would check with a local wrecking yard for a good compressor since you will save lots of money that way. You will need to pull a vacuum on the system before recharging so you may want to find someone to do the work for you who has the proper equipment.
If you don't have any good wrecking yards in your area try Car-part.com for a used part. |

Re: 1997 GTP A.C. compressor question
Or if the existing compressor isnt grinding or making noise, you could replace just the seal. It requires special removal and installation tools and as GTP Dad said will require a vacuum on the system to boil out all the moisture. If you decided to take it to the shop to have them replace the seal, it might also be a good time to throw in a new orifice tube. The thing I'm worried about with used compressors is that you may end up with one thats not any better than the one you got. Besides a new seal/orifice tube are fairly cheap parts, and labor shouldnt be any more than 200 bucks.
Ahhhh the AC questions start.... (warmer weather is in sight)

Re: 1997 GTP A.C. compressor question
If he's got green oil leaking out of his compressor, he's already got green dye in it. Pag oil isnt green untill you add dye to it.
I'd say he found the leak. I'd bring it to and AC shop and have them change out the compressor seal and orifice tube. Keep in mind if you replace the compressor, it is also recommended to replace the accumulator.

Re: 1997 GTP A.C. compressor question
Decided to go with a used compressor, found one locally with a 90 day warranty. Going to replace the dryer and orifice tube while I am at it. Called a local shop and they quoted $130.00 for purge and evacuation then I will replace compressor and stuff, take it back and they will pull a vacuum for 45 minutes and recharge with freon.
Does this sound about right? |

Re: 1997 GTP A.C. compressor question
Those are the ones I rebuild- replace the shaft seal and the body o-rings and they are good as new-- I use the new style doubled lip seal instead on the old singled lip-- never had a comeback yet- been doing it for 15 years...
