93 LeSabre Coding 41 (Cam Sensor) 43 (Knock Sensor)

1993 Buick LeSabre, 77,000 miles with OBD-I. Accoring to my wife the engine suddenly ran rough and coded. I read the codes and it returned
two(2): 41 (Cam Sensor) 43 (Knock Sensor). I drove the car after reading the codes and found it ran normal.

My question is twofold:

If either one of these sensors were defective, could it send information to the ECM and cause the rough motor performance?

My second question is how can I check these two sensors for a possible defect and the possibility that it is sending out false positives, as it were.

Also, how long should I disconnect the battery on this system to clear the codes?

Any help ? Thanks-In-Advance, Paul

Re: 93 LeSabre Coding 41 (Cam Sensor) 43 (Knock Sensor)

With a code 41, you could have either a cam sensor, cam magnet, or crank sensor problem. The code 43 was probably a result of the code 41 fault. The results of a failing CKPS can cause erratic engine performance, usually felt as a quick off/on sensation while driving. If you have a tach, watch for rpm fluctuations’ the next time it runs rough. To clear codes, you can disconnect the battery negative, turn ignition switch to the ON position to drain any residual power, turn ignition switch OFF and reconnect the negative cable. You can do a search in our LeSabre forums for 'Code 41' or 'Crank Position Sensor' and get plenty of info on what to check & test. Good Luck!

This sounds like a familiar issue to mine.
I'm going to dig down to the CPS and have a look.
