while replacing the alternator on a 96 v-6 alternator.. cant get the belt off... got the special tool from autozone but theres no room to get it down there... anyone got any ideas???

If you have the idler pulley tool then you should be able to get it in there.
Did you push it both ways to see if it would loosen the tension ? I think some of those tensioner tools have the 3/8" ratchet end at the wrong angle so its difficult to get it stuck in the hole on the tensioner. Ive used a thinner 3/8 ratchet, it is tight down there. Good Luck
