Exclamation New Recall

Saw this on Yahoo this morning. Thought I would post it here since it includes some Pontiac Grand Prix's. I believe the article said 1997-2003 Grand Prix the V6 3.8 liter.

Have a great day!!

Re: New Recall

Thanks for that info. That's a bunch of Prixs. I believe it only applies to the GTP models.

Re: New Recall

"The affected vehicles have naturally aspirated 3.8 liter V6 engines -- that is, engines that use atmospheric pressure rather than a mechanical blower to bring in air for combustion -- according to documents that GM filed with federal regulators last week."

Re: New Recall

Hmm, Edmunds.com are stating just the GTP models and I'm also seeing websites that say only the N/A Model.

Re: New Recall

there was a separate recall a couple of years back on the GTP models with the Vin-1 supercharged engines. Since many of the vehicles on the list in the article (which is quite vague to be honest) were never offered with the supercharged 3800, then it must be referring to the 3.8 Vin-K engines.

Thumbs down Re: New Recall

The fix for this recall is a joke. Instead of fixing the problem (oil leaking) they patch the problem by replacing the plastic harness that will catch fire when the oil ignites on the manifold. They claim no major incident related, Bull#$%% tell that to my wife driving a fireball down the Hwy.
Once again GM trying to save their own butts with no regard for the customers.

I agree Rich. This is an additional recall to supplement the already recalled GM cars with L67 engines which makes sense since the NA L36 engines could have the same issue. They were not in the previous recall. I wonder how many still have the original valve covers gaskets?

The CNN article is better on details.

Quote:
The problem involves a potential for oil to leak on the exhaust manifold during hard braking. When a car operates under normal conditions, the manifold can get very hot.

Oil that runs below the manifold's heat shield could ignite and spread to plastic channels that hold spark plug wires.

As a solution, the company recommends a change in the bracket that holds spark plug wires, which will be done free of charge.

Owners and dealers affected by the recall will be notified by letter next month with details.

The vehicles involved are:
• 1997-2003 Buick Regals.
• 1998-2003 Chevrolet Luminas, Monte Carlos and Impalas.
• 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigues.
• 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix.

GM issued a recall on a similar engine in 2008, according to the company's filing with the government. That problem was traced to a faulty gasket on the engine rocker cover.

Re: New Recall

Our car was subsequently on that list, 1997 Grand Prix, tho ours is an SE not a GT but we have the 3.8L engine. No letter yet in the mail.

The fix though, I agree, is a joke. Probably one of the many reasons why GM called it quits on Pontiac.

Re: New Recall

Has anyone gotten the recall letter yet?

I wonder if they will cancel the recall since they are doing away with the Pontiac brand.

Re: New Recall

This issue is not related to Pontiac, but GM corporate wide on any VIN-K 3800 equipped vehicles. The announcement that GM is phasing out the Pontiac nameplate will not affect vehicle warranties, recalls or mailing of notices.

Re: New Recall

I've never brought my car and, and wont. I've already replaced my valve cover gaskets (both of them) and wont let the dealer put junky GM gaskets back in there.
