2001 Grand Am SE Problem NEED HELP ASAP

Ok so I bought a used 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE from a dealer a little while ago and when I got it just drove it maybe 10 miles home no problem ran perfect.Well Took it to family members house about 100+ round trip and after doing about 70-80 all the way home can to stop light after getting off highway well when I took off I got on it a little and when the car went to shift into second the frontend shuttered or shaked like I burnt out.But tires never squeeled well took it to dealer next morning and he took it for test drive to see if it would do it again well he came from dead stop and stomped on it and it didnt do it well took it to shop to get transmission fluid changed just incase.Went on another trip a week later and it did it again from dead stop to second gear so I know its not crappy fluid or filter thoses were changed. And it will only do it when engine is at normal operating temp and seems only after driving 60-70 miles an hour and coming to a stop after getting off freeway any suggestions?????

I was thinking wheel bearing???

Re: 2001 Grand Am SE Problem NEED HELP ASAP

Sounds like your traction control is keeping it from spinning out.

Next time, try it with the ETC off and see what happens. A bad wheel speed sesor could do this

My GA GT had an issue simular, but mine did it on take off everytime, it would kinda miss out. All my ignition system is new, narrowed it down to the wheel sensor.

It was throwing a code for this randomly, yours would too if it were bad. Need an ABS capable scan tool to check for these codes.

Ok Thanks

I have no ABS light or Engine lights on but ill try to get a ABS code reader and see if it pulls any.

So yours when you went to take off it was like the tires were spinning and car shook but it wasnt spinning tires its like it was missing?

Re: 2001 Grand Am SE Problem NEED HELP ASAP

mine just hesitated when I took off, kinda stumbled then would kick in.

How many miles on this 2001 ?

Id think if it were a transmission problem, the trans shop that changed the fluid would have noticed.

Wheel speed sensors/wheel bearings are typical problems with this model grand am.

Re: 2001 Grand Am SE Problem NEED HELP ASAP

See thats what mine does iam pretty sure cause the Cheavy dealer said nothing was wrong with tranny and there were no meatl shaving in the tranny pan.

We got 94,000 miles on the car

Yeahthats what I heared the wheel bearings and sensor I mentioned it to the dealer and through out maybe wheel bearing be the problem he said it wouldnt do what I said it was doing.

What sensors did you replace to fix your problem?

Which ones do you recommend I change?

Re: 2001 Grand Am SE Problem NEED HELP ASAP

I wouldn't change the bearing/wheel sensor(s) unless it was definatly bad, and throwing a trouble code, they cost around $120 each.

Mine was showing dtc p0500 or p0503 somewhere in that range, which ended up being my right front wheel speed sensor circuit malfuntion.

The stealership would probly see a different code. Like a U1027-U1038 - Loss of serial communications for class 2 devices or maybe even B0001 - PCM Discrete Input Speed Signal Error or B0004 - PCM Discrete Input Speed Signal Not Present.
The last two could be from a short in the wire harness at the wheel, which also happens if not installed properly.
Might have that possibility checked out too.

Could also be nothing but a glitch in the pcm, but again Id think the stealersip would have seen this.
Oh, was this the same place you bought the car from ?
If it is might try a different place to check.

Edit >
And you can also check the sensors ohms with a multimeter to see if the circuits are bad, should be 1000-1200 ohms acrossed the sensor terminals. It should also show a small voltage, around 100mv when you spin the tire realy fast.
