Antifreeze Disappearing From Overflow Tank

My girlfriend has a 96 Explorer, and have noticed in month all the antifreeze is gone from the overflow tank.

It has 150,000 plus miles, no noticeable issues at the moment besides this one.

Thanks

Check with Auto Zone or Advanced for a loaner pressure tester. Pep Boys also has a program. Put pressure on the system and look for leaks. Start and run the engine with pressure on the system. If the gauge pulsates it probably has a blown head gasket.

Re: Antifreeze Disappearing From Overflow Tank

maybe the antifreeze just went back to the engine,. the overflow or reservoir is that, when temperature raises too much the water or antifreeze inside your engine expands generating some pressure, the cap releases that pressure sending some water to the reservoir, when it cools down that pressure turns to vaccum sucking that water back to the engine.

For what it is worth my 91 has done that since 93, it has its own happy level in the radiator and never changes , I was all worked up over it , but i,m ok with it. your issue may be different.

my 91 has done that since it was new, no matter how many times you fill the tank, it is gone. But the radiator has its own happy level that never changes.I never add to tank.

Thanks for reporting back. You will want to take care of it sooner than later. If you let it go too long it will likely cause the catalytic converters to fail as well, adding to the expense of getting keeping it on the road.
