I have a 1996 Sunfire GT that has an ongoing problem of not wanting to run or stalls out when the engine temp is warm. I drive the car until the engine is at normal operating temperature and then park it for say 5 or 10 mins. come back to it and start it. It starts fine but as soon as i put it into drive and take off it stutters and backfires and runs really rough then stalls out.. unless I am lucky and can keep it going by gently pressing the gas pedal. In that case the car will eventually "clear out" and drive on like nothing was wrong.. I must say tho this is the way it happens in cold or cooler weather... In the summer time or hotter weather i can forget about going anywhere until the engine temp is cold. It will even stall out after trying to take off from a stop sign or after having sat at a red light for a couple of mins.. heat (whether its the engine heat or the temp outside or both) seems to have a hand in the car acting up.. I have had the temp sensor replaced, the MAP sensor replaced and the vacuum line that goes to it replaced... I am running out of ideas.. could it be the injectors????
Any help would be appreciated. ps the map sensor was replaced but the code was never cleared. will that have a bearing on the problem? Thanks

Re: 1996 Sunfire GT - engine stalls out when warm
Check the ignition module and coils.
Not clearing the code won't make it run bad, but you never know if the code is back or if it's just the old one. That's why it's best to always clear the codes after a repair.

Re: 1996 Sunfire GT - engine stalls out when warm
Thanks for your reply.. the coils were the first things to be replaced along with the plugs.. the only things that havent been replaced would be the boots, housing or the ignition module. I will try that next.

Re: 1996 Sunfire GT - engine stalls out when warm
Would it be an ok idea to replace the top with the ignition module with one from the wreckers or just replace the ignition module itself with a new one?

Re: 1996 Sunfire GT - engine stalls out when warm
You could... We've got one at the shop that someone pulled off a junk car. If it's suspect, we swap it out and see if it works. They are expensive, so buying one to test on one single car may not be the best route, but it's up to you. It's fairly common on the 2.4 because of it's position, all the engine heat goes into the module and coils.
