carb issue

I have a 1971 bug engine and I am having trouble starting. I have replaced an old elec fuel pump that was not working correctly with a new (Facet) pump. It has been tested and is working. If I place a small amount of gas into the throat of carb it starts right up and will idle smoothly until gas is burnt off and it will die. I have read that I should be able to see a trickle of gas into the throat if the butterfly in top of carb is open and work the throttle lever. I do not see any gas getting into the carb at all. Any help is appreciated.

First test the fuel pump and make sure it is hooked up right, both electrical and the fuel hoses. If all is correct, disconnect the fuel hose from the carb and energize the pump to ensure fuel is getting from the pump to the carb.

If you have fuel to the carb, hook the line back up, pour some gas into the carb and start it up. Keep the throttle open and the RPMs up. If it continues to run with throttle input, but stalls when brought down to idle, then the idle cut-off solenoid valve isn't working properly.

The idle solenoid is near the carb base on the left side. It's a small cylindrical unit with a wire going to the coil. The valve is designed to open when the key is turned on, and close when the key is off. This prevents "run-on" of the engine when the key is off.

You can test the valve by removing the wire with the key on. You should hear and feel the valve "click" when the wire is touched to the terminal on the solenoid. If not, make sure the wire is connected to the correct terminal on the coil. If it's hooked up correctly, but still doesn't "click", then the valve is bad.

One other possibility is the carb float stuck in the "up" position.
