Angry Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

While backing into my driveway, which is uphill, if I just goose the throttle a little, sometimes engine will get stuck to about 1500rpms. If I shut car off and restart sometimes it will be normal, not always. Also recently after the first time this happened, the next time I used the car, trans would wait until engine rev'd to about 3000 rpms before switching, that is with a light throttle. I am guessing a sensor is going bad, just not sure what one. I have a 1999 GL with 3.5L and an Air hog filter

Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

Does it feel like the pedal itself is sticking? I know thats somewhat common on the 3.5

As far as sensors go, the throttle-position sensor might make sense, although Id think it would be something mechanical, I dont see how the engine could make it to 3000 rpms with a mostly-closed throttle plate.

Unhappy Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

The 3000 rpm situation is separate from the idle. They just started to happen around the same time. Today, the stuck throttle thing happed while traveling from stop light to stop light. If it were a stuck throttle I wouldn't think it would return to normal by shutting off the engine and restarting, although possible.

Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

Hey LittleHoov,

I cleaned my MAFS, and my TB this weekend. It has seemed to taken care of the throttle problem. I guess I had read about that one here, just never taken it to heart. I found lots of crap just around the opening, was like oil almost. I sprayed tb cleaning in it first, could have been just solidified carbon. Or maybe my car has blow by, causing oil in the intake. It does use a little oil. I have never cleaned the tb since I owned the car. I hope to gain a little extra mileage too I hope....

Thanks

I thought it took care of the problem, however it has raised it's ugly head again. I thought about taking the IAC motor out and cleaning the pintle, however I spoke to someone that said it could be a steering sensor. He said that there is a sensor that tells the engine to change speed if at idle and trying to turn. Has anyone had this problem or heard of it at all???

Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

Just an Idea-- Is the Air Hog Filter your running an oiled filter like a K&N? I've had friends who have had problems with Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) sensors and MAF sensors fouling with the oil, or cleaner that's used on those filters. The IAT is screwed into the top of the air cleaner assembly, I think there's been some success in cleaning these like a MAF, but it might be worth a few weeks of cleaning followed by a standard air filter.

Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

I think the sensor he is referring to is the crankshaft position sensor. Another common problem in the Intrigue.

There is an air temp sensor in the intake flex hose between the air box and the mass air flow sensor.

I also found this on another web site called carsurvey

"Had the engine racing at high rpms. Was told to replace air input thingy for $400+. A mechanic friend told me to replace a gasket between the air intake and throttle body; worked perfectly to stop racing rpms in idle and reverse; total cost about $3 shows shops will take you to the bank."

I am going to check to make sure the bolts are snug, if they are I will just get a new gasket.

Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

Replacing the gasket first is a no-brainer: $3 vs. $400

Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

I've been experiencing the same high rpm problem with my 2002, 3.5l Intrigue. It's so random and the diagnosic code keeps coming back as the tps (throttle position sensor).Replaced it, and the problem continued. I've also had the engine idle motor(or something like that) replaced and still not fixed. The code still comes up that it's the TPS? I'm going to mention the gasket to him next visit and we'll see. Thanks guys, fingers crossed. I'll let you know if I have any luck.

Take the air inlet hose off and clean around the throttleplate. While you're at it, take the MAP sensor off and clean it. It's the square shaped sensor with a 3 wire plug going to it that clips to the intake plenum next to where the PCV hoses connect. Those 3.5L engines ingest alot of oil which sometimes gunks up the MAP sensor.

If the problem persists after this, only then would I mess with the gasket. The throttlebody is simple to remove, but can be tricky - particularly the throttle cable clip for the cruise cable. Don't break it since it's only available with a new cruise control cable. I broke it on my wife's old Intrigue and I used a 2-liter pop bottle cap with a drilled and webbed hole in it. It looked funny but it worked.

It is VERY possible that you were sold a bad TPS. It should have a warranty on it so I'd try to exchange it.

Angry Re: Engine kicks to high rev, in reverse

Update to this thread. After I sold the car, I was told that they had to replace the TPS due to this issue, that fixed the problem. I wish I would have known that then, it would have kept me from getting very upset at my car many times. OH WELL!!

Thanks for the tip. We disconnected the TPS and the car works fine, so it was a bad sensor(even though it was new).I actually haven't even had it replaced because my gas mileage has been better without it.
