1990 right front driveline vibration

This just started but comes and goes regularly.

When I am cruising at a steady speed as low as 30mph and also at 50 mph, a rapid vibration occurs and will continue until I either decelerate or accelerate. It is though harmonics set in. Accelerating or decelerating put pressure on the driveline and the vibration stops. It always reoccurs when there is very light driveline pressure or it takes up the slack in the driveline.

At first, I thought it might be the inner bearing in the hub or a dry spine and it still might be because I haven't disassembled the front yet. And now I have another thought. Could it be the transmission? Could the clutches got some slack within the transmission? The transmission is functioning well.

This vibration is like going over a washboard. It is very rapid. It actually shakes the car albeit at a small amplitude. And it never occurs during acceleration or deceleration. And sometime it won't happen for and hour or more.

Could it be a dry bearing? There is no noise like a bearing when it is not vibrating.

If anyone has seen this phenomenon or know what is happening, I would like to know. I can tear down the suspension but I am not equipped to tear into the transmission and it would be nice if I could locate parts ahead of time.

Thanks,

Dieter

Re: 1990 right front driveline vibration

Usually caused by a frozen inner cv joint, sometimes but less likely a broken motor in conjunction with the axle.

Engine mounts, CV-axel and the transaxel could all be part of the problem. I would start with the cheap & simple things first. Have you ask for any professional on-site opinions, from an ASE certified shop? All we can do here is speculate, without riding in the car.
