MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
I have a 2002 3.8 L Grand Prix. My car has been throwing the P0410 - Secondary Air Pump Malfunction code for the past year and a half. Last year, some how I was able to pass the test. I reset the code and monitored the I/M status as I was driving. All the test completed except for the Secondary Air test and one other, so I took the car in and it passed. I know I'm allowed two test to be incomplete in NY. My problem this time around is that no matter what I do the Secondary Air test fails either 4th or 3rd to last, and turning the MIL light on. Is there anything I can do to pass this inspection with out fixing this device. I just don't have the money right now.

Welcome to AF
P0410- Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction The most common cause of this code is a bad air injection pump. Only green state GP's have A.I.R. pumps, and they are located in the left front fender area and are prone to water intrusion.

Re: MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
Thanks for the info, but I already know the pump is bad. I researched it a year and a half ago when I first got the code, but the problem is I don't want to fix it. I'm trading the car in for something more fuel efficient in the next few months as soon as I find what I want. I rather not fool around with the pump. I'll let the dealership deal with it.

Re: MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
Unless you resolve the issue there is no way you'll get it to pass green state emissions. You could get the PCM module re-programmed to skip testing of the secondary air injection system and prevent the DTC from setting and get IM status good but that is really not the solution since you are aware the pump is bad.

Re: MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
Ok, let me update you on what happened. I took the car to the mechanic to get the pump fixed. They swapped it out and the MIL still came back. They wound up charging me over 500 dollars and giving me a waiver. They told me they could troubleshoot it further, but it would be more time and money. The technician told me that everytime my car went from open to closed loop, all the values kept resetting, and that was the reason why the Sec Air pump test kept failing. Yet when I hook up my own scanner I can clearly see I/M monitors go from incomplete to ok. I would assume that if the values were constantly resetting that the I/M monitors would not complete. Am I wrong?

Re: MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
Did they install a new or used one? If it was used, and it sat in a salvage yard during below freezing weather, most likely it's bad too. THat's the biggest cause of AIR pump failure, water in the pump then freezes and burns up the pump's electric motor. The other most common issue is corrosion the water causes damaging/seizing the motor and or impeller shaft bearings.

Re: MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
Wasn't there a TSB out that gave an alternate routing of the air lines to keep the pump from getting water in it?

Re: MIL P0410 - I need to Pass NY Inspection
I remember seeing a TSB involving making a shield to protect it from water. I've seen a lot of new AIR pump part numbers that now include new intake hoses and wiring to eliminate this issue, but not on the Grand Prix's.
