Question Help Help. I screwed something up

I have a 2001 grand prix 3.8 n/s gt. I went to take my analog DIC out cut the wires to put a new digital DIC in only to find out that the DIC i ordered from ebay was bad. I spliced all the wires from the old DIC and the Green wire from the back of the speedometer. When i went to hook the analog DIC back up My Instument cluster does not work. it lights up but the only thing that works now is the turn signals. No RPMS, Fuel,Temp, Speed. What the hell did i do wrong. also on my analog DIC know the picture of the car lights up but knothing else no more door open lights, trac lights,. Please help me correct my stupidity. This is what i get for trying to do this myself with littel experience in the electrical area. i checked fuses under hood and behind glove compartment and they all are good. did me cutting the VSS wire behind the Dash and then reconnecting it screw something up. I just want to fix it. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

Yes i used your write up. What are the wires on the digital DIC that i need to hook up just to get power to it (i want to test it again) do i need to hook everything up or just the power and ground. Also i have 2 ground wires from the old DIC. When u spliced into the VSS wire on the back of the speedometer i cut it in half. I crimped it back together and it does not work. what did i do wrong. Sorry for all the questions. I did not tap into the ODB II wires yet and i also hooked the orange wire up to the radios illumination wire since it says constant power on it. I just want my cars gauges to work again is there a fuse that im missing.

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

I will take a look at the wiring diagram for your car and get back to you.

The only thing I can think of is you used the wrong green wire on the back of the Instrument Cluster.

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

Does your guages go through a "bulb check" when you first start your car?

I'm confused, you are supposed to splice to the VSS wire, and not cut it. Did you reconnect all them?

Double check all the wires on the back of the DIC. Pay close attention to the ones that have a black stripe in them (ie green with a black stipe). Maybe something is connected wrong.

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

I accidently cut the wire initially. I reconnected it though. When i start the car nothing on the gauges moves no dummy lights or anything. The only thing it does is light up the lights in the backround just the orange lights so i know it has power. But like i said i put the key in and nothing happens on the instument pannel when i turn the key none of the gague needles move, no check engine light.abs, oil, srs, temp light, none of these come when in start the car now.

Did me cutting the VSS wire screw something up? thats the only wire i messed with in the cluster. But i would think that after reconnecting it, that it should be fine. (i appreciate everyones help)

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

chrissbee,

under the hood check the fuse labled "radio fuse" it should be a 10a.

Also, in the glove compartment check the fuses labled IP-IGN, BTSI, and DIC/HVAC. All should be 10 Amps.

I will post the DIC/IP Cluster Wiring diagram a little later.

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

oaky the BTSI fuse in the glove box was blown. i changed it and my gagues all work (thank you). before i checked the ones in the glove box i pulled the ones from under the hood. i put everything back right and now my car wont start. It has power radio, lights and gauges all work but it just cranks and cranks without turning over. I checked the fused under the hood again and all the big fuses and mini fuses are fine. There is one black fuse under the hood that has a diagram on the top of it but when you pull it out it does not have a way to check it .

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

That box that has the diagram on the top is a relay. There is not an easy way to test the relay. Sounds like there is no spark or fuel. When you turn the ignition to the on position do you hear the fuel pump prime for like 5 to 10 seconds. If you do then it should be getting fuel. Could be an ICM problem?

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

Pull out the BTSI fuse and attempt to start it. Report Back.

Re: Help Help. I screwed something up

Everything was good a relay went bad she starts and the DIC works. The the only thing is know when its running there is a rappid ticking noise from the cluster i unpluged the black connector and it stops. I plug it back in and it starts up. But everything works but you it ticks like crazy. However as soon as you step on the parking break it stops but i cant drive with my parking break on.
