Help with brakes
Ok I have a 91 Stealth base. The rear brakes are locked up and extremely rusty. I want to just replace all of the brakes. I will need all new everything, calipers, rotors, pads, etc. The first thing I wanna know is, what tools will I need to remove the old brakes, and put on the new ones? Will this be a project too tough for me to attempt? I do not drive the car right now, so time is not a problem. Also, where is a reputable, CHEAP place to get this stuff? I would like to keep it under 500 bucks for all 4 brakes, which I dont think is possible, but Ill stay hopeful.

Re: Help with brakes
You can take it all off in your driveway at home with a jack, some stands, and any basic wrench set. i would however recommend investing in an 18" pipe that fits the end of your socket wrench handle (for extra leverage) and a bottle or 2 of PB blaster...both will make dealing with the rust significantly easier. As far as difficult, they aren't, but our brakes are a tiny bit more complex than the average grand am or something...if it's your first brake job, just ask someone who has done a brake job before for some help. If you can't find someone, check out stealth316 or vr4stealth.com (links are in the faq) both should have pictured instructions. Rule of thumb: do one wheel at a time, that way if you get confused you can always look at the other side. As far as parts, pads can be found relatively cheaply for half decent ones...I think my Stillen metal matrix pads were like $120 for the whole car iirc. Rotors are gonna run you a bit more, but if you run a search on here or 3si, you can usually find the places that you get a decent product for a good deal. Just remember when you are stopping from 100+ you can appreciate the saying: a good product isn't cheap, and a cheap product isn't good. Brakes are one of those things where quality should definitely be a factor in your purchasing decision.

Re: Help with brakes
Most definitely sound advice Igo.
The cheap abay rotors should be avoided. Leet on 3si had one break around the rotor hat while running the ring. He has the event on an in car camera. Needless to say stopping was quite difficult.

Re: Help with brakes
Well, I am not even sure if my car in its current state would do 100, nor do I wanna find out
. I just need brakes that will work for every day braking, nothing extreme, maybe from 75 off the highway or so. Will they work for everyday driving? (the cheap fleabay ones)

Re: Help with brakes
Definitely dont use use ebay.
Brembo blanks are getting harder to find. There was a post on 3si about them no longer doing aftermarket OEM stuff anymore. Auto parts stores blanks will serve you fine for every day use.

Re: Help with brakes
My friend just bought 4 Hawk brakes and drilled/slotted rotors for 300. If you haven't already done this, I can send you the link later.
You also need a C clamp to compresses the pistons before you finish.

Re: Help with brakes
stay away from drilled and slotted unless your seriously racing/showing your car. unless u dont mind buying new rotors eveytime they warp. blanks will be fine, and when u compress the pistons besure to do it slowly
